Spring Break 2018

Ram's parents visited during Ram's spring break so we let the Lambs also take spring break. I'll try to briefly say what we did while they visited.

They arrived on a Saturday and we went out to eat for sushi. The Lambs had piano contest that morning before they arrived and everyone was tired so we called it an early night.
Sunday we all went to church and then ate at Blaze pizza.
Monday we did some shopping including looking at iPads for Lamb 1-that is a requirement for his high school next year. We took Lamb 2 and 3 swimming. We ate lunch at a chain restaurant and supper at a wonderful local fish restaurant.
Tuesday we did some house shopping with our realtor, but none of the houses that we looked at were right for us. We ate a small lunch at a chain restaurant, mainly to feed the Lambs after house shopping. We went to the art museum since the Lambs had never been there and there was also an exhibit of high school artwork. That evening we took the Lambs to my parents and just the adults went out for a nice prime rib dinner. After that we went to another restaurant for drinks and dessert so we had more time to talk without the Lambs. I really enjoyed our adult night out.
Wednesday we made Paleo pancakes with coconut milk whipped cream and lingonberries. I took Lamb 2 to vision therapy. Ram and his dad did a few handyman tasks that I have wanted to do for a long time and was afraid if we didn't set a day for that, they wouldn't get done for several more months. I was very excited to get all that done. I had planned on cooking supper, but we went out again, this time to BJs Brewhouse.
Thursday we went to the Botanical Conservatory to take some family pictures since the weather didn't cooperate to take them outside. Then we went to see Black Panther, Lamb 2 wanted to see it the most and we had heard good reviews. The movie was so loud and I haven't been to the movies for a long time. I couldn't really tell you very much about the movie because it was so loud. Lamb 2 and 3 loved it though. Then we ate supper at a steak restaurant.

As you can see, they spoil us when they come to town, and Ram and I both had a spring break from cooking too. Their visit went too fast and it was time for them to head to visit some other relatives in MI. ID is just too far from IN and we have to fit a lot into seeing them one week a year. They left on Friday so it was nice to have a couple more days of spring break before Ram had to return to classes. We were all pretty worn out after all those fun days! Ram doesn't have another school break until Thanksgiving so we made the most of this break.

The Magic of Ordinary Days

My friend Kristen blogged about this Hallmark movie here. I haven't watched a Hallmark movie for years. I decided to read the book first. The book was a fast read and I enjoyed it. I decided to go ahead and get the movie from the library.

I don't want to spoil the book or the movie, but I will admit that there was a part towards the end of the book that was not believable to me-I don't think the history part of this could have happened. I wish the author would have left that part out and just stuck with the main story.

I was pleasantly surprised how the movie dealt with this part of the story. The movie dealt with it in a way that I thought could have happened. The history still wasn't perfect, but it was more believable than the book. Here is an example of a movie that I thought was better than the book.

Recently I have been really disgusted with movies. They either get the theology wrong or the history wrong or don't stick to the story the way that the author wrote it in the book. This was a movie that I didn't have a problem with the theology. The main male character definitely understood and followed through on his vocation as a husband and father. The female character was a pastor's daughter, but it took the whole movie for her to catch on to her vocation as wife and mother. I was amazed how closely the movie stayed to the book (with the exception of the part mentioned above).

I highly recommend The Magic of Ordinary Days movie.  I am also going to see what other books the author wrote.

Movie Review

The homeschool community was very excited to show Beyond the Mask in the theater here last spring. We had such a busy spring we didn't even attempt to attend the showing. I requested it from the library and finally had my turn last week. It was frustrating that I got it over the holidays. I squeezed in watching it one night after the Lambs went to bed.

After watching it, I think the Lambs would need to be a little older to enjoy this movie. I think the age to watch this would be high school. I didn't try to fit in the Lambs watching it before it was due and because it was in high demand I wasn't allowed to renew it.

The homeschool community had a right to be excited about this movie since two homeschool graduates made this movie. This all began with some cousins getting together and making home movies several years ago. Now they were ready to produce a big film.   It was impressive that one actor was John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings), one writer was Paul McCusker (Adventures in Odyssey), and Stephen Kendrick (Fireproof, War Room) helped with the directing. There were 750 special effects! People around the world worked and also volunteered to make this movie. I appreciated that it was PG rating.

This movie seemed to have it all-action, adventure, love, and historical setting. They did their research so it was historically accurate, but they played with events that really happened so that the characters in the movie were in those historical events. I personally thought some of the events in the movie were a little far fetched to be historically correct, but they could have happened. I am often frustrated with the historical accuracy of films. This one seemed to get it correct or at least show "what might have been".

I am also often frustrated with the theology in "Christian" movies. I was pleased that this movie seemed to get it right. Then I listened to the bonus features and as the producer talked about their motivation to make this movie they got it wrong.*

I would recommend this movie to high school students, especially that they watch it thinking about what they know about that point in history and that they think of how the movie was made-looking at the special effects. There wouldn't be anything wrong with showing it to younger and older, but I don't think they would get as much out of it. And I would recommend that the family watches the bonus features together and talk about the theology together.

*Spoiler Alert: Quit reading here if you want to watch the movie!

Theology:
A female character in the movie says, "Neither redemption or love can be earned. They are gifts granted freely from God."

The producer talks about this part of the movie in the bonus features. He quotes Titus 3:5. Then he says, "If we accept that (Titus 3:5), turn from trusting self and trust Him, God creates a new identify in Christ Jesus."

The producer also says, "We don't have to work hard to be good enough. Jesus has already done that for us. If we accept the redemption He offers we have hope for the future."

I believe the female character got it right, but the producer did not. We say in the meaning to the Apostles' Creed in the Small Catechism-

I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

The producers statement goes beyond the female character's line and what the producer adds is not necessary. I know blogging about this is being really nit picky. That is the point. The Gospel is that Jesus did it all for us! We don't have to, nor are we able to, accept it ourselves.

History:
One part of the movie that I appreciated was it gave a broad view of what was happening all over the world during Colonial Times in America. My high school history class seemed to just focus on what was happening in England and America. But we forget that dumping the tea in the Boston Harbor was much more involved than just those two countries. I thought the movie did a great job on this, especially because people were working on this movie all over the world when they made this movie. Because it was a group effort that view came across well.

You could tell that they did their homework and it showed that the historical accuracy was pretty good. Even the parts that didn't really happen, could have happened in the movie.

Stuart Little

We just completed our first chapter book read aloud as a family. We read Stuart Little. All the Lambs were finally old enough to pay attention to a few chapters a day and remember what we read before on the next day. Ram did the reading and Lamb 1 could have listened to the whole book in one sitting, Lamb 2 listened well too as long as we only read one or two chapters, and Lamb 3 did ok listening for a 3 year old.
I remembered seeing the movie in the theatre about 10 years ago and all I remembered was the movie was one of the rare movies that I thought was better than the book. I also remembered that the movie was very different from the book.
This afternoon we had a movie afternoon. We turned on the air conditioner, popped popcorn, put root beer in cups that wouldn't spill on the living room carpet, and popped in Stuart Little DVD. The Lambs were so excited to hear the popcorn popper. We did this in the afternoon in the hopes of putting the Lambs to bed on time if not early.
Lamb 1 was glued to the TV for the entire movie. Lamb 3 got bored, but laid on the sofa and made it through the whole movie. Wow was there a difference between seeing the movie in the theatre before kids and seeing it in my home with my kids! Lamb 2 got completely freaked out and cried through some of the movie. He was so afraid that Stuart (a mouse) would be eaten by the cats. I continually told him that Stuart would be ok and Ram held him for most of the movie and we made it through.
I asked them afterwards and Lamb 1 liked the movie best. Lamb 2 and 3 liked the book best. Hopefully they have memories of a fun afternoon as a family watching a movie with pop and popcorn instead of memories of being freaked out by the movie!
1. We hope to continue chapter books read aloud as a family.
2. Perhaps our next book choice should be one that I don't know is made into a movie.
3. The next movie that we watch as a family, will be previewed by Ram or Ewe before the Lambs get to watch it.

Celebration! and One Thing Leads to Another...

Yesterday I finished our taxes so we had a small party. I actually don't even do our taxes, we send them to someone else. But it is quite difficult to gather everything together and document everything with 3 little lambs. I just about went crazy when I was almost done, but not quite and I was trying to finish. Ram was gone and Lamb 1 was asking me questions about animals, Lamb 2 kept crying he was hungry (he didn't finish his breakfast), and Lamb 3 was crying and I don't know why. I finally gave up and waited for Ram to come home. Then it only took me about a 1/2 hour when Ram could watch the Lambs.
I had told the Lambs that I was busy so many times in the last week that I decided they earned a small party. We had just celebrated Lamb 1's birthday the day before. So yesterday we celebrated with pina coladas (of course no rum for the lambs!), leftovers from the birthday supper, and peach apricot cobbler for dessert (we rarely have dessert after supper).
All the Lambs were in bed before 8pm so Ram and I decided to watch Prince Caspian. I regret that we were unable to get to the theater to watch it. I'm glad we were able to see it last night.
About midnight Lamb 2 was crying. When I went to check on him he was wet all over and even his sheets. He cried as Ram and I changed everything on him and his bed. I don't know what happened as we haven't had that problem with cloth diapers before. He did have a lot to drink last night.
Today I ended up doing a lot of laundry (from Lamb 2 last night) and dishes because I watched a movie instead of doing dishes last night. I worked for a long time today in the nursery organizing the Lambs clothes and pulling out the too small clothes. I started to pack up the Christmas ornaments (I know it's March) but got interrupted when the 4-H delivered the fruit we ordered. So then I had to clean out the refrigerator to get room to put the fruit in the fridge. I threw out a bunch of old salad dressing etc. that was just taking up room in the fridge. Then I had to do dishes from the fridge clean out. Then Ram had to take the trash out from the fridge clean out. We finally were able to warm up leftovers for supper and then it was bath time and bedtime routine. I never did get back to the ornaments and the Lambs didn't get to bed until 8:30 and with the time change and needing to be up for church early tomorrow, that was not good.
Tomorrow after church our church next door to us has the annual ham dinner. So tomorrow will be Sunday School, church, and going to the ham dinner. I'm sure we'll all crash tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully I can post some photos from Lamb 1's birthday soon.
