We are plugging away at daily routines:
*Homeschooling with extra work for Lamb 1 to prepare him for high school and Lamb 2 and 3 concentrating on learning to read and spell.
*Our whole family is attending a weekly Bible study on Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the book of Mark, and the Small Catechism. We do the readings together to prepare for weekly quizzes.
*Lamb 2 and 3 are working on memorizing the meanings for the 6 chief parts of the catechism with the goal of confirmation in May.
*All 3 Lambs are practicing for a piano contest in March.
Update on my dad:
He became so weak at the beginning of February that he fell a few times. The paramedics recommended he go to the hospital and get checked out. The hospital was overcrowded and he waited several hours to get a room. He did have the flu and was much better after a few days in the hospital. We thought maybe he would go to a place for rehab, but not counting the hours he was in the hospital hallway that he wasn't officially a patient, he wasn't in the hospital long enough for insurance to pay for rehab. He went directly home and has been doing great since he has been home. We even took him to a high school basketball game last Friday. It is not easy as your parents get older and prayers are appreciated.
Vision Therapy Again:
Lamb 2 competed a long evaluation with a doctor here. We don't regret doing vision therapy in Idaho because it was helpful for several areas for him, but it wasn't enough. He is beginning vision therapy here at the end of the month. This doctor does things differently than our ID doctor and we are hoping these different ways of doing things are going to be helpful for Lamb 2. This doctor does 1 time a week therapy with 20 minutes of daily homework. Lamb 2 will get bifocals. He has 20/20 vision and can see fine in the distance. He doesn't truly need glasses for close up work, but the hope is that this will ease the stress on his eyes as they try to focus to see near work. We are expecting at least a year of therapy here. One nice thing is you pay one price and it covers everything (therapy, doctor exams, computer software for homework, etc.) no matter how long therapy takes. This is different than Idaho and is much better to know exactly how much it costs. Lamb 2 was very excited to go pick out his glasses and is impatiently waiting for them to come in.
After Lamb 2 begins, then we would like this doctor to also evaluate Lamb 3. For a long time he had no motivation to learn to read. Now he does and reading is very difficult for him. I am curious if he also has a vision difficulty and would also benefit from Vision Therapy.
Library volunteer:
A classical school started at our church this year. Our boys are too old as they began with lower grades and are working their way up, but Lamb 2 and 3 take art class there. I volunteered to help with the school library. It has been so much fun to get the books ready for the school children. Most are donated or library discards. The headmaster and his wife are choosing quality literature for the school. It is so fun to see what she finds on the 20 cent library discard shelves.
Lilla Rose:
I just signed up to be a Lilla Rose consultant. I'll blog more about this as I learn more, but if you don't currently have a consultant, contact me for more info if you are interested. I have been wearing Lilla Rose hair clips for about 10 years and I figured it was about time that I had a business card to hand to people when I get a compliment!
Dentist:
Our whole family went at once for dental cleanings and checkups. We all did well except one Lamb needs a tiny filling. Lamb 2 needs an orthodontist consultation because his teeth are so close together plus there is a problem with his canines. After dental checkups we are all extra good about brushing AND flossing AND using mouthwash for awhile...
Cooking:
While Ram is in school I have had to do more cooking than while he was a pastor. I was getting tired of the same old recipes and often 1 or 2 Lambs don't like what I make. I did a little research in my cookbooks and on the Internet to get some new recipes to try. Last night I made beef stew and it went fast even though only one Lamb had more than one helping. Today I made beef vegetable soup and we'll see how that goes tomorrow. I have some more recipes to try this week. The Lambs were shocked that I cooked something new two days in a row!

Family Update
- Ram and I both had dentist appointments today. Ram's report was ok, but he needs to be better about flossing. My report was not good, I need fillings on both sides of my mouth. They think we were so concerned about my root canal last year that they missed these tiny cavities. They said it is time for prescription toothpaste since I have these unexplainable need for fillings now and root canals last year. They stressed it had nothing to do with brushing and flossing, more likely it is hormones. I really think all my pregnancies have caught up with my teeth and that is the reason. I am also going to give coconut oil pulling a try to see if it helps any. I've thought about oil pulling, but now I have more motivation.
- Ram and I both went to the chiropractor today. I feel so much better after all this work with books-both lifting boxes of books and sitting typing the catalog.
- The Lamb with a rash that we thought was eczema had to go back to the doctor because his rash did not improve after a month. The doctor had a student, physician assistant, and another doctor all look at the rash to make sure that he wasn't misdiagnosing it. He thought it might be Fifth disease but this Lamb already had that plus he had no other symptoms. It baffles the doctors because he didn't have a fever or any other symptoms that would tell them what it is. They still think it is extreme eczema. We are trying two new prescriptions and will return to the doctor in a month. If it still doesn't improve by then we will need to go to a dermatologist. That Dr. visit was frustrating and took a long time.
- We finished the bookcases in Ram's office, but before I celebrated completion, Ram brought home the contents of one file cabinet drawer. I spent a long time organizing the "What about..." pamphlets and other reports by the LCMS that have been sent to pastors since the 1970s. Ram threw out some of his notes from when he studied in England. I thought that we were going to organize periodicals like Lutheran Witness that were in his file cabinets. I didn't even know I had to organize all this other stuff. We discovered several duplicates since Ram and I are both on the official roster. It is worth working on the file cabinets and passing on duplicate copies to others.
- Lamb 1 worked on his birthday wish list tonight. Yikes, 2 weeks from tomorrow! I do not feel ready for birthday season. (All the Lambs and Ram have spring birthdays.) I need to get my plans together. I also need to prepare myself for my last year before there is a teenager in our house!

Family Update
1. Lamb 2 took a science class this week. I will blog more about his class later. The location ended up changing from where it was supposed to be. That meant a longer drive to chauffeur him than I planned. Ram did a couple of pick ups but it was a 22 mile round trip in traffic. I was so glad when the week was over and we were done with all that driving. He loved his class so it was worth it. The other Lambs weren't interested in doing a science class this year.
2. We received some information on our health plan changes for next year. I spent much of the week researching it online and also e-mailing some fellow pastor wives about what their church plans to do about health insurance for next year. I still have a lot more research to do in order to recommend to the board of directors what I think is the best way for both the church and for our family. I know no one on the board of directors has time to research this. Nor do they have as much interest in this as I do for my health care costs for my family. I misread the information at first and was panicking about the changes. Thankfully I misread it and it is not as bad as I first thought. Health insurance and doctor billing is so drastically different than when I was born. I don't know what the answer is for this whole situation, especially for small LCMS churches. I do know that God will continue to provide for our family even if it is not in the way that we expect or would choose.
3. I listened to most of the Higher Things broadcasts of church services from Grand Rapids online this week. It was a little tricky because of the time change. I needed to get up to get ready to take Lamb 2 to his class anyway so I was able to listen to Matins. It was time to go get him during most of the Vespers so I was only able to listen to about half of those. I prepared supper during most of the Evening Prayers. I could totally get used to all those services live streamed every day and I would never get tired of them. Ram picked up Lamb 2 from class today and when he got home I was bawling because they had just finished singing Behold a Host Arrayed in White and For All the Saints. Thank you so much to Higher Things for the Live Stream. Lamb 1 is excited about going to Higher Things next year. We already have a meeting at church planned for next Sunday to start fundraising and planning!
4. Ram and I both had dentist appointments today. I was shocked when he got home and said he had his first cavity. Just like Lamb 3, they have been watching this tooth for awhile and he finally needed a filling. Because of Lamb 2 breaking his tooth, Ewe's root canal, and Lamb 3's first filling, we have met our dental deductible this year. After I asked Ram a bunch of questions about his cavity, that was my first thought- if he is going to need a filling this is the perfect time to need it since we have met our deductible! I still can't believe he was 40 before he ever had a cavity. The dentist apologized to me again for needing to do 2 root canals. He said that is so rare that he never expected I would need two until he tested my teeth.
5. The Lambs begin two weeks of swim lessons next week. I'm looking forward to seeing how Lamb 2 does this year after his nose surgery last year.
6. I'm going to pick blackberries on Monday so plan on lots of time in the kitchen next week making jam and preparing blackberries for the freezer.
7. I cleaned out my scrapbook closet this week and got things more organized. I'm not done but it looks tons better than before.
8. I went to my naturopath chiropractor today for the first time this calendar year. I was generally not feeling well since we returned from our vacation and I already feel better. I don't understand how naturopath works and perhaps it is all in my head, but I feel it is worth every penny because I feel so much better after I go. He started me on three supplements and I am to let him know in three weeks if they help. I may not need to return to him, we'll see then. I was pleasantly surprised that he only charges $70 an office visit since we have not met our deductible. That is worth it to me.
9. Ram had a funeral last week that was physically and emotionally draining for him and also totally unexpected for everyone in our congregation. We both received a lot of phone calls from members that wanted to talk about it. We have nothing on the calendar tomorrow and we plan to sleep in and relax after a tough week. Funerals were common in MN but Ram has only done a couple of funerals of active members since we arrived in ID. We were both out of practice of the whole funeral interrupt your schedule completely. I don't think most people realize how much work LCMS pastors put into deathbed calls and funerals. This family was shocked how soon Ram arrived at the hospital and he spent a lot of hours after that. We know that is what this saint would have wanted and I was happy to share Ram with her family and he was happy to help them even though it was exhausting.

Broken record
Lamb 3 needed a filling today so he broke his record of no cavities. Now Ram is the only one that never had a cavity in our family. Thankfully Lamb 3's was on a baby tooth. When they got in there they discovered a cavity on the tooth next to the one they saw at his last cleaning. So he had two fillings today. He did great and ate lots of ice cream this afternoon.
Tonight the Lambs talked about the commercial that advertises children's mouthwash and how it claims to prevent cavities. They think the commercial lies because they use that mouthwash daily and Lamb 3 still needed fillings today. I told them that I do think the mouthwash prevents some cavities because only Lamb 3 needed fillings today and also the dentist has been watching this tooth for Lamb 3 for the last couple of years and it finally needed a filling.
By the third child I'm not so upset about fillings, especially on baby teeth. We do continue to faithfully brush, floss, and use mouthwash daily. I can't help that they inherited my teeth instead of Ram's teeth. We just do the best we can do. And we're thankful for dental insurance to keep the cost down when dental work is necessary.

Lamb 2 and Lamb 3 photos
I'm attempting to get caught up on posting photos. These photos are from February. I decided to start here, but eventually I have photos from before February to post too.
| This is the best photo that I have of Lamb 2's chipped front tooth. You can also see why he was more worried about his nose than his tooth. |
| This photo shows Lamb 3's first lost tooth and also two of his new favorite toys, Teenymates. He was thrilled that his Easter basket had one Colts Teenymates. |

Ewe's medical adventures
I had my physical last week. They want me to repeat my pap. It wasn't abnormal but it didn't test correctly. It will be free, but I need to find time in our schedule to repeat.
I thought I was having my root canal yesterday, but it ended up the dentist wanted to spend time testing different teeth and figure out exactly what was wrong. That testing showed I definitely need one root canal and I probably need two. It was my choice if I wanted to do one and see if that helped the other tooth or do both root canals now. I chose to do both and get it done. That is scheduled for a couple of weeks unless I get in so much pain that it becomes an emergency. I still can't believe all this since those teeth are completely healthy, it is the nerves.
I had high blood pressure at the doctor when I had my physical. I think it is just going to the doctor-"white coat blood pressure", but it could be all this other medical stuff happening to me now. I went to the chiropractor this week and that should help my blood pressure. Now I need to find time to regularly check my blood pressure. Ram thinks if I get the root canals done that will also help. I hope to get this taken care of soon because our family doctor took another job and is done at our clinic in June. I don't want to deal with this with a new doctor. We were so blessed with this doctor for three years and we will really miss her.
Everything else at my physical and lab work came back normal. I plan to begin exercising when the Lambs begin track in a couple of weeks. I plan to walk the track while they have practice. None of my medical problems are major, but they all take time to deal with. Last year we helped Lamb 2. This year I'm attempting to take better care of myself.

Boys will be Boys
Today we received a bill for Lamb 1's trip to the ER last August when we thought he broke his arm. I spent some time today trying to figure out the bill but found out Saturday is not business hours to get answers. While I was working on this the Lambs were over at the neighbor's playing. They began in the neighbor's back yard on their trampoline. I don't mind them playing there because I can see them from my window. After a little while they moved to the neighbor's front yard to play basketball. They had never done this before and I could not see them there.
Soon Lamb 2 came home hurt. He was panicking because his nose was bleeding and he was afraid he somehow messed up where he had surgery. When his nose stopped bleeding then he said his front tooth also hurt. He had chipped a tiny piece off his front tooth.
The good news was that our dentist was the one on call. The good news was that it was the bottom of his tooth. The bad news is that the dentist wants to make sure there is not swelling and wants to let it rest all weekend before x-raying and looking at it. So all weekend no cold or hot food, no hard foods or food like corn. Hopefully we can get him in on Monday.
I called the neighbor mom to try to find out what happened because we couldn't see them in their front yard. I had her cell number and freaked her out because she wasn't home with her kids and had no idea what I was talking about. She did admit that dad will let them play rougher than she does. We finally pieced together what happened from what the boys said. I told her we weren't mad at them, we trust our kids over at their house, it was just a difficult one because for once we couldn't watch them.
Lamb 2 plays the roughest of all our Lambs. I'm not surprised that this happened to him. What I am surprised about was this was a pretty mild play. They were riding homemade scooters on the sidewalk. Lamb 2 hit a crack in the sidewalk and tumbled off face first. I am disappointed for him that he needs dental work after getting hurt during mild play instead of when he was playing rough.
I have no idea what to serve for meals tomorrow that Lamb 2 can have. Off the menu is homemade guacamole with chips, also chips and salsa. Possibly we can still have homemade ribs.
Lamb 3 lost his tooth this week. Lamb 2 and Ewe need dental work now. We are waiting a few more months to see if Lamb 1 needs braces. Thankfully Ram had a great checkup at the dentist a few weeks ago!

The root of the problem
You know how when you go to the dentist they ask if you have any teeth that are bothering you? I had never answered yes to that question. I only have a few fillings. When I had my dentist appointment last week I told the hygienist that I had trouble on one of my bottom front teeth when I drank hot liquids like tea. I expected that I was going to need another filling. She did x-rays and didn't see anything but mentioned it to the dentist.
When the dentist came in he looked at my x-rays and that area of my mouth and said he couldn't see anything to be concerned about. Then he did a test where he put cold on that spot. It should hurt for a second and then the pain/cold feeling should go away. On that tooth the pain did not go away after several seconds.
He then broke the news to me that it is never a good sign if hot liquids bother your teeth. Also that he can see no reason for pain there. My tooth looks perfectly healthy. To make a long explanation short, I need a root canal on that tooth and there is no evidence of why I need a root canal there. His best explanation is that that tooth had some trauma sometime in my life and the tooth finally realized it.
I am scheduled to have this done in a few weeks. I am supposed to pay close attention to how this tooth feels while I wait. I really can't win-if it stops hurting while drinking hot liquids that either means that the nerve completely died or that there was something weird going on recently and it is better now. But the dentist could see no reason that I could avoid a root canal at this point. For now, my nerve is dying inside the tooth, but my body hasn't figured it out yet. It would be really bad news if I wait until my body figures it out and an infection begins in there. The good news is it is on a front tooth so I will just need the root canal and a tiny filling, I will not need a crown.
I wouldn't have mentioned it if it hadn't bothered me recently. If I hadn't mentioned it they wouldn't have noticed it from the x-rays. I asked if I could wait until my 6 month checkup and the dentist was horrified by that suggestion. He wants to take care of it now before my body figures it out and I have a worse problem there.
Ram allows me to get a Starbucks after going to the doctor. I wonder how many Starbucks a root canal is worth? Especially when it doesn't look like I did anything wrong and the tooth is perfectly healthy, but the nerve inside that tooth is not! The bummer of all this is we don't even get Be Well, Serve Well $ for dentist appointments any more.

Lamb Dentist Appointments
All three boys had dentist appointments scheduled this morning. I felt a little guilty taking appointment times when the public school has a break. When we arrived only Lamb 3 was on the schedule. I remained calm and thankfully I didn't say outloud what I was thinking. They worked them all in even though they weren't in the computer. I still don't know what happened to Lamb 1 and 2's appointment times. I'm always impressed that all three can have their appointments and we can get out of there in less than an hour.
All their appointments went well and no one had cavities. Lamb 1 needs to brush in the back of his mouth a little better. They recommend sealants for Lamb 2's molars but I have been hesitant to do this. I guess I need to do a little more research before telling the dentist my decision. Lamb 3 remains in the no cavities ever club.
The Lambs get tokens to pick prizes out of a vending machine when they visit the dentist. They are now stocked up on bouncy balls. Lamb 2 thought the toothbrush they gave him was babyish so we had to ask for a different one.
Everyone in our family has doctor appointments scheduled with our naturopath chiropractor in December. Lamb 2 has one more vision therapy session and one more evaluation with the vision therapy doctor. Lamb 2 has nose surgery scheduled. Lamb 3 needs a shot in December. That will conclude our 2014 doctor visits. Overall we did very well fitting everything in while we met our deductible this year.

I feel like a terrible mother
Lamb 1 had to get 4 caps on his teeth and 2 silver crowns when he was 3 years old. This was done at a surgery center and he was put under to do this dental work. We had helped him brush his teeth, but I had no idea that you were supposed to take your children to the dentist before they were 3 years old. We were sent home after his surgery with areas of his mouth to brush extra careful. He did well at all his checkups since then.
Lamb 1 and 2 had several appointments scheduled at the dentist in January, February, and March. We kept having to change the appointments because Ram had a funeral at church, then we had a miscarriage, then he went to his grandfather's funeral, etc. We finally had an appointment today.
The pediatric dentist we see is 3 hours away so it is an all day deal including shopping. Lamb 1 threw up twice on Saturday night and Lamb 2 threw up once Sunday morning. I didn't know if they could handle an all day trip nor if they would be healthy enough. We decided to load the car and the boys and start and if someone felt sick on the way there it would be our clue to come home and call the dentist and reschedule. We really didn't want to reschedule because of all the times we had rescheduled before.
We made it and although Lamb 1 was tired and didn't want to get out of bed, once we got going everyone was fine and healthy all day long. Lamb 1 was a little more grouchy and impatient than normal, but it was a long day and he had just had the flu.
Lamb 2 did great at the dentist. He has tons of room between his teeth and at this point it is very unlikely that he'll get a cavity because he has so much room there that it is more difficult for food to get stuck there.
Lamb 1 also did great at the dentist...until last thing at the appointment the dentist looked at his x-rays taken today. He saw 2 almost cavities that we can watch diligently and 2 cavities that need to be taken care of now. I just wanted to cry because we do brush his teeth well and I thought that after his first dental work we had this problem solved. Lamb 1 almost always chooses water to drink at meals and other times too. The other Lambs almost always choose milk or juice. None of the Lambs ever have sticky foods because Lamb 1 has caps on his teeth. It just doesn't seem fair that a child that brushes well, almost always drinks water, and never has a lollipop (well, he had a couple of lollipops when he was 2 years old) has to have more dental work.
The good news was that Lamb 1 cooperates with the dentist and follows directions so this dental work can be done in the office, we won't have to go back to the surgery center. I was horrified at the thought that some children would have to go to the surgery center for this kind of dental work. The other good news is we still have money in our health care account from the church to pay for what the dental insurance will not pay for. The other good news is this is on his baby teeth so hopefully we can brush and floss better and take care of this before his adult teeth.
I was in shock at the office to receive the news that out of Lamb 1's 20 teeth-4 have caps, 2 have crowns, 2 need crowns, and 2 almost need crowns-so that equals half of his teeth. When I questioned what we could do better, they answered brush better and floss better. I can't see us doing any better on the brushing than we are doing, so that leaves trying to floss better. I was in too much shock to think to ask the dentist what we should tell Lamb 1 about this-how much do we tell him to prepare him for going back to the dentist for dental work in a few weeks? I'll have to call the office and ask that question. I don't know why he needs all this dental work myself and I know that question is coming from Lamb 1!
I remember when I was pregnant with Lamb 1 and I was at the dentist in the waiting room, there was a mother waiting while her two children had their dental cleanings. Her two girls were just a little older than Lamb 1 is now. The hygienist came out and gave the mom the news that both girls had cavities that needed to be taken care of. I was shocked to hear her laugh about it and respond to the hygienist that she thought they should eat a little less candy. I thought it was terrible that children the age of her girls would need any cavities filled. Ram has never had a cavity and I only had 2 right when my adult teeth came in. Now 6 years later, my oldest son has even worse teeth than those girls!
We scheduled an appointment in a few weeks for him. I did not do well the first time he had dental work, but it was more serious at the surgery center. I'm hoping that I do better this second time in the office. I also hope that he really does cooperate with the dentist and we can get this taken care of in the office and not have to make this a bigger deal.
We also scheduled Lamb 3 to have his first dental checkup in 6 months. I really hope that he follows Lamb 2 instead of Lamb 1 with his teeth!
